Jang Sung-Sook

Nam Hee-Kyung
Abstract
Clients¡¯ crying in psychotherapy is an important clue of therapeutic progress while its interpretations and applications are rarely discussed. The present study reviewed the literatures regarding the significance of clients¡¯ emotional crying during the therapy and provided suggestions to better understand the construct. First, many literatures emphasized that crying is an outcome of social interaction between a therapist and client. The clients¡¯ emotional crying needs to be understood from their perspective. Second, despite different views on therapeutic benefits, they all agreed that crying is an important emotional expression in therapeutic progress but only when it comes with cognitive explorations. Third, crying is not always functional in psychotherapy, thus therapists should consider individual factors of clients which induce or control crying behavior. Finally, the present study further suggests the needs of experiential researches regarding the therapeutic utilization of clients crying in psychotherapy in conjunction with qualitative examination for deeper understanding of the construct.
